Each year out here at Old Tavern, we try to get better and better as stewards of land, produce growers, livestock handlers, and overall people. That holds no exception to our farm crew.

Field Crew Member

Responsibilities: 

• Work directly in the field seeding, irrigating, weeding, and harvesting crops

• Assist with processing and packing crops as needed

Qualities:

• Ability to work both independently and in a team setting

Packing Shed Manager

Position Overview 

Old Tavern Farm, a family-owned and operated farm in New Kent County, Virginia, is seeking an experienced, organized, and motivated Packing Shed Manager to oversee daily operations of our produce packing facility. We grow a diverse selection of vegetables and fruits for restaurants, wholesale customers, CSA members, and our farm store. 

This hands-on leadership position is responsible for ensuring that produce is washed, graded, packed, and prepared for distribution efficiently and to high standards of quality, freshness, and food safety. The manager coordinates closely with field crews, farm management, store staff, and customers. 

Primary Responsibilities 

• Lead daily packing shed operations, including washing, grading, packing, quality control, and order preparation. 

• Supervise, train, and delegate tasks to approximately 3-6 employees; establish priorities and work alongside the team 

as needed. 

•Manage the order board and fulfillment of wholesale, restaurant, CSA, and farm store orders; check order accuracy 

and resolve discrepancies. 

• Coordinate with the Farm Manager and field crew on daily harvest lists, harvest priorities, and produce and fruit 

availability. 

• Coordinate with the Store Manager and sales staff to fulfill CSA shares and market orders. 

• Maintain daily produce inventory and packaging supply inventory, including boxes, bags, and other materials. 

• Communicate professionally with customers regarding orders, availability, shortages, and concerns; support positive 

customer relationships. 

• Maintain clean, organized work areas and oversee safe food handling and proper produce storage. 

• Complete daily and weekly checklists and logbooks, follow applicable produce safety requirements, and maintain and 

update packing shed manuals and procedures. 

Required Qualifications 

• High school diploma or GED. 

• Valid Virginia driver's license and clean driving record. 

• Experience in produce packing, food handling, agriculture, warehouse operations, or a related field. 

• Ability to supervise staff, delegate responsibilities, and manage competing priorities. 

• Strong organization, time management, communication, customer service, and attention to detail. 

Computer proficiency, including word processing, spreadsheets, and electronic recordkeeping. 

• Ability to work independently and perform hands-on physical work. 

Preferred Qualifications & Ideal Candidate 

• Some college coursework or a college degree preferred. 

• Supervisory experience in produce packing, agriculture, or food distribution. 

• Knowledge of vegetables and fruits, grading standards, postharvest handling, packaging, and produce safety practices. 

• Experience with inventory, order management, and customer relationships. 

•Marketing knowledge, including social media and website use to promote products and communicate with customers. 

• Fluency or conversational ability in Spanish is highly desirable for communication with Spanish-speaking farm 

employees. 

 

Work Schedule 

This is a full-time, year-round position with seasonal variation in required hours. 

• Peak season (April-October): Approximately 55-60 hours per week, typically Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM-6:00 PM, with 

occasional Saturday and/or Sunday work. 

• Off-season (November-March): Reduced working hours based on farm operations, staffing, and seasonal production. 

Physical Requirements 

• Ability to regularly lift, carry, and move boxes and other items weighing up to 50 pounds. 

• Ability to load, unload, wash, sort, and pack produce and perform other hands-on packing shed tasks. 

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the workday.

Part Time Delivery Driver

Location: New Kent County, Virginia 

​

Old Tavern Farm is looking for a dependable, organized, and customer-focused part-time delivery driver to join our team. We are a family-owned and operated farm growing fresh vegetables and fruits for restaurants, wholesale customers, and our local community. 

Our drivers help get farm-fresh products to customers safely, efficiently, and on time. We value reliability, attention to detail, and friendly customer service.

Work Schedule 

• Tuesday: 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM 

• Thursday: 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM 

• Friday: 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM 

• Every other Wednesday: 5:30 AM - 4:30 PM 

Approximately 24 hours per week, plus an additional Wednesday shift every other week. Hours may vary based on delivery volume and seasonal needs. 

Delivery Routes 

Most deliveries are within the Richmond metropolitan area, with occasional longer-distance day trips to North Carolina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. No overnight travel is required.

Job Responsibilities 

• Safely operate a company delivery vehicle to deliver fresh produce and other farm products. 

• Load and unload boxes and other items weighing up to 50 pounds. 

• Check orders for accuracy and deliver products to the correct customers. 

•Follow delivery routes and schedules, completing deliveries efficiently and on time. 

•Handle produce carefully to maintain freshness and product quality. 

•Maintain accurate delivery records and report delivery issues or customer concerns. 

• Keep the delivery vehicle clean and organized. 

• Provide friendly, professional customer service.

Required Qualifications 

• Valid Virginia driver's license. 

• Clean driving record with no at-fault accidents or moving violations within the past five years. 

• High school diploma or GED. 

• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening. 

Ability to lift, carry, and move items weighing up to 50 pounds. 

• Strong organization, attention to detail, time management, and dependability. 

• Ability to work independently, follow instructions, and communicate effectively. 

 

Preferred Experience 

• One to two years of previous delivery-driving experience. 

Familiarity with Richmond and surrounding areas. 

• Experience delivering to restaurants, grocery stores, or wholesale customers. 

Compensation 

Pay is based on experience and qualifications.

• Set up market booths, sell produce, and connect with customers

• Pack and unpack produce for markets

• Talk with customers and share the story of our farm, connecting with the community

• Ability to multitask in a busy market setting

• Ability to grow sales using product knowledge and strategic upselling
